I need more spare time

I’ve had this rifle for almost three months now. I have yet to shoot it myself…

Anderson Mfg. sniper rifle (20″ barrel, .223Rem) with 3.5-15x Nightforce scope and YHM BUIS.

While it may be a tackdriver, I have a hard time hearing a .223 rifle described as a “sniper rifle.” Long range ballistics and all that.

According to the surveys I’ve read, the median distance for police sniper shots in the US is just under 60 yards, and median is closer to 35 yards. .308 is the most common caliber, followed by .223, so it’s not uncommon. Personally, I’d view .458 SOCOM as the ideal police sniper round because of its ability to defeat barriers without destabilizing completely (with round nose bullets). But .223 is a great learning platform, easy and relatively inexpensive to shoot.

I suppose it depends on your definition of sniper. To me, 60 yards is not sniping.

        • Brock Manson says:

If you think that “sniping” is only conducted at long range, then it is your failure — not the failure of the actions taken by “snipers.”

Good grief. Here, I’ll help you out:

          intransitive verb
          1
: to shoot at exposed individuals (as of an enemy’s forces) from a usually concealed point of vantage

That is, if Merriam Webster’s definition is good enough for “your definition.”

OOps! I left comment under the Cross picture. My bad. Oleg, is that scope have starlight capabilities or just low light as in dusk? Looks like the ideal ‘yote rifle/scope combination. OK so I repeat myself. Old people do that.

Well, if you don’t have the time for it…just send it to me. I will take good care of it.

I just started plinking and I love it. I bought a Ruger 10/22 for my kids and while I was zeroing the scope, I just got caught up in it. Why am I saying that? Because shooting is fun. No matter what caliber you shoot, as long as you enjoy it you are doing it right.

.223 is fine for sniping. I doubt any of us will see the need for sniping. Those that do will never see the need for sniping at ranges found only in Afghanistan. LEO do snipe and they do it at very short ranges. Because they are doing it in a very congested environment. They have to shoot amongst victims and other LEOs and cars and buildings and power lines and fire trucks and whatever else is on scene. Most military snipers shooting at long range are shooting in less cumbersome environments.

And let the flame war begin….

Sniper rifle? Not in million years. Police sharpshooter yes. Sniper no… 60 yards is the distance I fire my Ruger 10/22..
