Swiss defeat gun control in a referendum.

Though I am no fan of universal conscription, at least the Swiss show mutual trust by letting the population at large hold on to the military arms and to keep private weapons also.

  1. I am of mixed feelings about universal conscription. I can see it if it’s truly universal–a price of citizenship that everyone pays–no exceptions. It’s when you have the privileged elite, however defined, who can force others to serve and fight on their behalf that it gets a truly bad odor.

OTOH, I prefer a society where folk are willing to stand up in its defense in sufficient numbers that conscription is not necessary.

In any case, good for the Swiss for allowing their people keep their arms.

What a relief. The Swiss model is a shining beacon of hope in an otherwise dismal European gun culture. The only thing I’d change is inducting and training women as well, make it truly universal.

Hear! HEar! to the Swiss ..well done.
