One way to rejuvinate an old weapon

A friend brought in his truck gun today. When it entered the studio, the magazine was full of ball, upon exit of modern defense ammunition. It may be a small change, just better terminal performance and less muzzle flash, but even Josey Wales liked his percentages.

The pistol is Makarov Modernized, PMM (12 shots of 9×18 or, in this case, 380ACP). If anyone knows of a spare magazine for it for sale, please let me know.

So thats it? Buy some whiz bang new specialty ammo? One head shot with good ole commie block berdan primed stuff and its game over!

  2. Chas says:

I understand that Makarov ball has that cute, hemispherical nose, like half a ball bearing, for a reason. It’s so that it will roll and tumble on impact, which enhances its effectiveness. Is that correct?

  3. So, the 9 × 18 magazines won’t work, correct?

I do not know for sure, but probably not.

Just like my carry gun for the past eleven years, except mine is 9×18. I am 99% sure the .380 and 9×18 use the same mags, but good luck finding any 10 or 12 rounders.

The standard 8 round work just fine in the double stack, they just wobble a bit.

A single stack Makarov magazine will work (so I recall from my Makarov days). Alas, gone are the days when those could be had for less than $10.

It doesn’t have rails. It doesn’t have a 100-round magazine. It shoots a round that hasn’t got a “4” in the name. It MIGHT not stand up to a 50k round torture test. But, by golly, I love my Mak and wouldn’t hesitate to carry it for defensive purposes. It’s never failed to fire, extract, eject, or do anything that a reliable pistol ought to do.

Great design, and still a pretty good price.

Wow. You can even make Maks look good. Impressive. I need to pull mine out of the safe for the first time in ages. And my Cz-52. Ugly and crude buy damn fun.

    • Liam Burns says:

The CZ-52 is a favorite for SteamPunk role players & photo sessions. Yes, I know it was designed in 1952, but it has a look like it could have been a late-1800’s-style pistol, with the ridged Bakelite grips, etc. Plus C&R eligible!

      • Sean says:

I handed my one Steampunk role player friend a Nagant M1895 for such things. It took her husband a while to realize it was a real gun. Of course, there a lot of things he doesn’t know.

  6. Firehand says:

Two different magazines: the standard version is a single-stack that holds eight, this is a double-stack; harder to find.

  7. Weer'd Beard says:

Or you can just get a CZ-82, same idea, little better trigger and Ergonomics IMHO.

Weer’d, right you are. The only negative thing I can say about the CZ-82 is that it’s painted, not parked or blued. This might be the reason they’ve never really taken off with us low-budget CCW people.

I’m seriously considering having my ugliest one parkerized.
