“Terms of Enlistment.”

I recently mentioned Marko’s new book as the best military science fiction I’ve read in quite some time. Good to see it gain the deserved popularity. At three bucks, it’s the best entertainment you can get for a day or more. Would have been a bargain at thirty.

    Just finished it this morning. A fun read that reminds me of the early Heinlein novels.

    Looks to be the first book of a series that I will buy all of.

    So, I bought it on Amazon, which allowed me to read it on the Kindle Cloud website. Then I fired up my Windows-7 virtual (I run VMWare on my desktop at home), and downloaded and installed Amazon’s Kindle Reader for Windows 7. This allowed me to download the .amz file. Then I loaded FileZilla, connected to the ssh port on Linux Mint virtual (which is my primary desktop), and copied the file over.

    Then in Linux Mint I loaded the file into Calibre, and converted it into .epub. (No DRM to deal with, which is nice). Then I plugged in my Nook, and copied the converted file, and then started to read.

    It seems a well-crafted story, so far, though I’ve barely started. Well worth the price. But I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle.

    If I buy an ebook from B&N, I can download it to my Nook, or to my computer, or whatever. If I buy an ebook from Amazon, I can only download it onto registered devices. Unless and until I install a reader onto my desktop, and register it with Amazon, they will not allow me to download a single ebook file. (And Amazon does not have a reader for Linux.)

    There’s a reason why I generally refuse to buy electronic media from Amazon. Or from Apple, for that matter.

    Thanks for the tip. I just finished the book and hope that there’s a sequel coming soon.
    You’ve probably already read it but perhaps you could recommend “The Last Centurion” by John Ringo. It’s one of the best books that I’ve read (for ex military, Conservatives, etc). Lefties will hate it though.
