Today is the 25th anniversary of my family coming to America

On this day in 1989, I flew to New York from Rome (which was a waypoint on the way from the USSR). Today, I flew back Rome to celebrate the anniversary with my parents who discovered America for me. My father is an American who was born in another country by mistake. He remedied that error as quickly as he could, bringing my mother and I along.

America is more than the sum of its parts, but I have to say, it would be much less without you and your family here.

Funny how that works. There are Americans all over the world who can’t or just haven’t gotten here yet. I had an office mate in grad school from the PRC who was American. He was required to return to China, but eventually managed to get back and live here. He was particularly enthused with the gun shows. Now if we could just convince the folks who were born here but aren’t Americans and would be happier someplace like, say North Korea, to go back “home”.

  12. And we are richer for it, Mr Volk. 😀
