    When I was in the infantry I figured out that “seeing the whites of their eyes” wasn’t based on their being close enough for you to view the sclera, it was a function of them being so close to your line of muzzles they were deer-in-the-headlights about what they were about to receive.

    Of course if the guy next to you gets hit, and you have to wait five seconds for the sound of the shot, that could produce the same effect.
