   I thought the definition of “drilling” was a combination gun (one with both rifle and shotgun barrels) with three barrels. Apparently the term also includes firearms with three shotgun or three rifle barrels.

   Larry is correct. I believe Chiappa makes a 2-barrel shotgun, but it shouldn’t be confused with an actual Drilling.

     Actually my point was that I thought drillings were only combination guns. Then I looked it up and leaned that 3-barrel shotguns or rifles are also considered drillings.

   It is said that most defensive weapons use has the bad guy run away before a shot is ever fired. I’d say that this sort of weapon is likely to produce that result — breaking down a door only to be faced with THREE big barrels is likely to be pretty intimidating.

   “Driling” just means 3 barrels. From the German word for three. The Swiss used to have a three barreled AA gun they referred to as a drilling.

     I suppose that would be “Dreiling” (meaning “triplets”), which our friendly auto mangle (autocorrect) indeed does turn into “drilling”.

       It got mangled into English, with the Empire’s utter disregard for authenticity and demand to pronounce everything “the English way,” even if the word wasn’t.
