Given how MG prices are these days because of the 86 ban, plus the ammo consumption of anything belt fed let alone one of the fastest ones ever made, it’s about a tie on which is more expensive. But if you have the right lady, she knows that and prefers the 42–and thank heaven she doesn’t want a minigun.
So my wife and I are finished shopping and on the way back to our Jeep, and a limo pulls up. Three couples get out. Tuxes, formals, corsages, obviously it’s prom night. But first, of course, dinner. And the guys are taking their dates to eat at Bass Pro.
Where were these girls when I was in high school? To be fair, Bass Pro wasn’t around yet, either.
I never cared for the MG-42 or its successor the West German MG-3. If I had to go with a WW2 MG I’d pick the M1919. It was more accurate , had a better rate of fire, and was far more reliable. For the most part German guns from WW2 suck. They are less, weapons for war, than they are monuments to engineers. They say that anything the Russians can build with six parts , the Americans can build with 12 and the Germans WILL build with 56. I have always been dismayed by what I call “the cult of Nazi military superiority”. They really weren’t all that good. Their weapons didn’t work well in the field. Their armor was brittle and most of all THEY LOST.
OTOH, at the time there was a big difference between German military superiority and Nazi military superiority. Unfortunately for Europe, the wrong ones were in charge.
No such thing. The German army SUCKED. It is perhaps the most overrated military that has ever existed. It would do well to remember that the NAZI political party was the elected government of Germany. It was also the single most popular political party in German history with “Party” members and supporters that made up 75% of the officer corps . 100% of the SS. and 55% of the Heer. (regular army) . But the WW2 NAZI military wasn’t superior to anyone. They got there asses handed to them with stunning regularity after 1941 . If they had been the least competent Oleg’s family wouldn’t be here. Nether would Russia, Eastern Europe, Most of the mid east, Brittan, western Europe or France. They had a few good officers and a few good weapons. But mostly they sucked . German “leadership” still does.
Ray,
I find it interesting that the German Military opponents did not think the way that YOU do. Their kill/loss ratio was far higher in their favor, just as one measure of competence. We all were lucky that Hitler rushed the Germans into war years before their generals thought they were really ready.
Unfortunately for the Japanese, they had no choice as far as timeline goes. FDR set that up.
Well, gold at least should make good bullets. Diamonds? Maybe useful as shot at close range, but better for cutting steel at high speed on a lathe or mill.
Oleg for the win.
Who can afford diamonds these days?
Merle

If you go around wearing diamonds, someone might try to steal them. But armed? 🙂

Kids, these are the “good old days.”

You are so wrong on just about everything you said, why even comment?

Legend has it silver works pretty well, also.
But can she cook?? Oh, never mind.
Judging by the photo, you’d better be very careful how you ask that question. 🙂
