Cute and competent

Airsoft PLR16 with a stock (effectively SU16D) by Socom Gear. Since Airsoft isn’t restrivted by 1934 NFA regulations, we can try short barreled rifles for handiness and appreciate their useful qualities.

Even the adult stock of the 22WMR Crickett isn’t too long for her.

Accurate pistol on the cheap

A year ago, I mentioned Crickett Hunter pistol in an article. More recently, I had a chance to try it for accuracy and was not disappointed.

This is from 25 yards on a windy day, with pistol rested on a bag. Scope is the basic 2×20 shipped with the gun. Ammunition was a birthday gift from a friend about eight years ago.

Other groups I shot were very similar. The one unattached hole was likely the result of my target flexing in the wind. Considering that I am a mediocre marksman and hardly ever shoot scoped pistols, this is pretty impressive. The five round group is around 1/2″, and the four touching bullets are half of that.

Cost to duplicate that: $137 plus whatever your store would charge you for the transfer. The pistol I linked has plastic instead of wooden frame, but also comes with a bipod and a hard case which my pistol did not have. If you prefer wood, $159 gets that. In a world of multi-thousand dollar match pistols, that’s a pretty good deal. The ammunition might not be as cheap as most 22LR, but it appears to be well worth the extra cost for the accuracy.

Magazines for 1911 rimfire conversions

Two years ago, I got an Iver Johnson 1911 with a .22 conversion kit. Last year, I got a spare magazine for it but had not tried it until today. The new magazine, made like the one included with the pistol of billet aluminum, didn’t fit the magazine well! Upon close examination, I could see that it was machined much more roughly than the first magazine, and was a bit wider. Internal machining was also rougher, and caused a couple of snags during the unloading.

Fortunately, I also had a 14-round plastic magazine “for Kimber, Iver Johnson and Marvel 1911-22”. It loaded easily enough and fit the gun well. Tighter fit meant it wouldn’t drop free when released, but also that there was absolutely no wiggle once seated.

Available for slightly less than half the cost of the original ($45), it turned out to be a good deal.

PS: the Marlin 25-rounder I recently mentioned tested out in a Papoose take-down carbine today. Its owner also had a 75-round Promag drum which seems discontinued — a pity, as it seems to be similar to Black Dog Machine 50rd drums in design and execution.

Riot control legalities.

Assume a legally reasonable US state and an on-going violent riot…

Defender faces a crowd of several hundred advancing on a residential property above a storefront. Crowd already demonstrated violent behavior, has visible melee weapons and incendiaries but no visible ranged weapons. Would it be legal to:

  1. Fire large birdshot to hit the entire mob at a hundred yards for less lethal effect?
  2. Fire buckshot to hit a substantial part of the mob at twenty yards?
  3. Fire slug (or rifle bullet) to hit an individual with an incendiary device at a hundred yards? at twenty yards?

Main legal question are:

  • Less lethal deterrent by private parties rather than police?
  • Hitting everyone in a mob rather than aiming at specific individuals?
  • Firing at extended range to avoid being rushed and overwhelmed by sheer numbers?

Cobalt Kinetics

I met Cobalt Kinetics crew at SHOT Show, and did a shoot with them right before the NRA Show in Nashville.

Using a linear compensator on a 14.5″ carbine was my idea and it worked out very well for comfort.

As you can see, accurate rapid fire is possible even without a concussive muzzle brake.

A more conventional offering with a brake. It made my hair move five yards from the shooter, but it also cut recoil from minimal to almost none.

I like working with Army and USMC veterans. They evidence a good shooting form, and can hold the poses almost forever.

Cobalt’s exclusive feature: ambidextrous bolt release. It’s much faster to use than the left-side paddle on the rifle, and doesn’t require moving either hand from the firing position.

No Boomershoot this year.

Due to too many competing commitments, I won’t be in Idaho next week. I let the people most directly affected know this, but I know that a few others might need the info as well.

Rapid fire with shotgun

Cheyenne Dalton is 14. How fast can she ran the updated Auto 5 shotgun and still hit clays?

Pretty fast, I think.

Good thing Crazy Quail launcher kept up…

…and we brought plenty of ammunition.

National defense and 6th grade math

Mar.Artillery-Intro

(Image from http://www.festungguernsey.supanet.com/about_us.htm)

Imagine an observer with a stereoscopic rangefinder and a telephone, camouflaged on a seashore. The observer is 3km ahead of a cannon located further inland for concealment. The bearing is between the cannon and the observer is, for the purposes of communication ease, zero.

artillery

Now, for the math and geometry questions:

1. The observer sees a ship that is 5km away at bearing 30 by the rangefinder and compass. Assuming the ship is neither head-on nor in profile, how can the observer calculate speed and the direction of travel of the ship from observation? Assume no readily visible landmarks behind the ship.

2. Let’s say that the ship is at this moment 5km away at bearing 30 as observed from the forward post. What are the distance and the bearing at this moment from the battery which is 3km behind the observer?

3. Let’s say that the ship’s direction of travel is 135 degrees from the zero reference bearing (going over the observer’s right shoulder) and the speed is 20 knots (approx. 36km/h). If it took the cannon crew fifty seconds to calculate the firing solution, and the shell flight time is ten seconds, at which point relative to the cannon (distance and bearing) should the gun be aimed?

4. Assuming the ship is 100m long and the combined side and deck projection at the 30 degree angle of the shell impact is 25m, what is the probability of a first-round hit from the cannon with 1 minute of angle dispersion?

Having performed these calculations, meditate on the addition of gun platform movement to simulate ship to ship combat. Increase range to 10km. Increase dispersion over time as the barrels heat up. I am beginning to understand why ballistic computers and firing synchronizes (for shooting all guns at a consistent point in time during the wave roll) were such a big deal. And why trained specialist meant victory in artillery exchanges on land and sea. Upgrade the difficulty once more for air to air combat, and we see why gun turrets went away despite remotely operated guns with individual mechanical fire computers.

Maybe this is more like 7th grade, which would not have been beyond the 1930s students who spent more time on the basics.

Abuse of official capacity

Are there any down sides — practical or ethical — for imposing greater punishments for misdeeds committed under the color of authority? For example, should rape while in police uniform carry a higher sentence than the same done by a private actor? The logic is that a regular rape or home invasion or theft would be resisted without fear of official retribution. The same would apply to crimes committed while impersonating cops or other officials — such as in case of home invasion.

You can’t feed your arms to a predator…

…and hope that it spares your body.

Even if the initial plan called only for taking your property, the encouragement given by abject compliance motivates thugs to take greater liberty with your health, life and dignity. And with the health, life and dignity of every future victim — unless you end them in the act.

“For among other evils which being unarmed brings you, it causes you to be despised” ~Machiavelli

Being armed does not guarantee either safety or victory, but being unarmed by choice or disarmed by lies, coercion or custom pretty much guarantees eventual ruin or dependency. The options are then limited to extinction like the dodo or essentially turning into livestock like the chicken, to be used or used up at the whim of the armed thugs or government.

Nowhere in this range of choice is living with dignity, free to choose the course of thought and action. While thoughts may be free, the slightest manifestation of them becomes so perilous as to train the habit out of the general population.

Strength in diversity

Wondering around the NRA show and socializing with my friends and colleagues reminded me again just how varied and friendly the American shooters are. A monoculture may have the perceived advantage of default cohesiveness, but conformity usually is enforced subtly yet strongly behind the scenes. In my world, conformity isn’t a virtue. The premium is placed on treating others with consideration and respect, and on being supportive of those who aren’t welcomed by the mainstream. A clear example was the enthusiastic welcome received by Pink Pistols members at shooting events nationwide compared to the lukewarm or even hostile reception at Pride events in states like California.

Be friendly and be safe. Creed, ethnicity, sex, age, martial status, other traits besides those that violate the “safe and friendly” requirements, are of no consequence at the range. We welcome one and all.
