Models Who Carry Guns

One reason why my models seldom look stupid in gun photos is that they are trained. Some show up with their own sidearms, others get training and help with getting equipped in the course of working with me. The Galco holster above belongs to one of my favorite models. She’s also been to an Appleseed shoot. It’s not surprising that she looks competent when handling firearms.

Off-hand

Sarah is 14 and fairly lightly built, but correct technique can compensate for lesser strength. Appleseed training events are good places to learn how.

JP SCR11 rifle

JP Enterprises makes a unique AR variation, SCR-11. The receiver is fully enclosed in the back, making it comfortable to shoot suppressed. Folding left-hand charging handle keeps all the gas inside the receiver. The fit and finish are superb, triggers are some of the best I’ve tried and the muzzle brake is extremely effective.

The 18″ heavy barrel rifle shown is good for 0.5MOA and some shooters report even better accuracy. The rifle was developed by people who are avid shooters and it really shows in the well-considered design. The finds you see near the barrel are for radiating heat outward.

Shown with a Lucid 6-24x scope.

AAC/Remington Micro 7 carbine for sale.

Recently, I posted photos of the Micro 7. My friend who provided it for the photos now wants to sell the rifle, new in the box, unfired. The rifle is sold by itself (no optic) for $715. If interested, let me know. At stores, when they can be found, these sell for over $800.

Censorship.

A journal I follow had a note: “Livejournal is blocked in Kyrgystan, Kazahkstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, so apologies for the long delay and if I have neglected you guys.” So there’s a definite USSR flavor to some segments of it. Looks like the “stans” got somewhat  worse than even the original empire, while the Baltics got better in many ways. Even Russia got better by far than the USSR was, despite the claims otherwise by many. At least it’s possible to communicate with the rest of the world now, and there’s a realistic option for leaving the country which was absent during most of my time there.

Fundraiser for Tamara

A timely summary of the fundraisers for Tam‘s medical expenses. Lacking the time to review all those until now, I put in a little directly but hope to come up with a fundraising idea of my own shortly. Suggestions are welcome.

Friends and sponsors

My friend Jason (who has appeared as a model in many of my posters) now runs Afternow Adventure and Tactical Supply. I recommend him highly. He and his wife Jenna also public On The Trail magazine.

Reloader’s Bench have been extra helpful on my firearm transfers to the point of being a de facto sponsor of this blog. They are the best Nashville store for reloading supplies. They do NFA transfers, too.

My friend Russell now offers slings and other useful and unique rifle accessories at Trooper Gear.

Bringing Down the Bacon

Buck, Dwayne and Weston (not pictured), along with their dogs arranged the meeting. They guide hunts in Florida and Tennessee and may be reached at 321-960-4287.

I ended up running about 500 yards after the dogs to catch up with the hog. The “hunting outfit” was just a jacket with the spare 20-round FAL magazine in a pocket. I had my Kahr P9 for backup. I was pleased to have kept up with pace the animals set without tripping over or running out of breath.

(Photo by Robin Curry) The pig was shot at about seven yards while running obliquely. The 1-4x scope was set to 1x, illumination turned on to make it work more like a red dot. 150gr Federal Fusion soft point hit just above the left eye and continued to the top cervical vertebra. He dropped at once and did not move. I should have the photos of the skull and the recovered bullet later this month.

The RFB worked really well for the hunt — I didn’t have to worry about the noise or the recoil and had 19 more rounds in reserve. It was fairly easy to run fast with the short bullpup. While this was a very easy level hunt, it was just what a beginner like me needed to get the basics.

When comparing 18″ Carbine and 24″ Hunter versions of Keltec RFB, I realized that the length of the 18″ version with AAC 762SD-6 suppressor is 1/10″ longer than the 24″ version. The weight and the balance would be fairly similar, with the long barrel being only a little heavier. So the Hunter version is actually practical for running around the woods and not just the deer stand. You’d lose the sound reduction but gain 200-300fps of muzzle velocity.

Last Ditch Innovation: German Delayed-Blowback Rifles

Forgotten Weapons just posted a video I helped produce, Last Ditch Innovation about Gerat 06 and 06H. These eventually became CETME and G3 rifles. As usual, the information presented by Ian is top-notch.

Where in Nashville Could I get a Laptop Fixed?

This morning, my Windows 7 laptop failed with blue screen. Efforts to boot it yielded “disk access error”. I have no unique data on it, just need to get it functional again. I suspect the problem may be virus-related rather than a hardware failure. Where in Nashville should I look for qualified help?

UPDATE

Seems the HD failed. I’ll deal with it later, as it has little unique data on it. Got a replacement, found my Windows DVD and installing it now.

Defensive Voting.

Two-party system pretty much guarantees defensive voting by informed people. Most Republicans I know hold their noses when voting got GOP. The most common positive view of McCain I heard was “He’s old, maybe he’ll die soon after the election.” Others merely thought he was less horrible than Obama, not much of an endorsement.

I suspect that plenty of well-informed voters consider a Republican president to be a greater threat. Economic reasons aside, let’s talk about privacy. While Roe-vs-Wade is an established legal precedent for personal privacy, we do have a government that violates everybody’s financial and personal privacy routinely in pursuit of the “war on drugs”. We also have a government that’s entirely willing to murder people over a couple hundred dollars of tax revenue. As John Ross pointed out, the kind of draconian enforcement necessary to effectively restrict abortions would make the USSR look benign by comparison.

So, on the one hand, we had an authoritarian socialist representing a party that is perceived as anti-gay (the vocal opponents of equitable legal treatment of gays basically tarred the rest with guilt by association) and anti-privacy (via repeal or blocking of Roe-vs-Wade). On the other hand, we have an authoritarian socialist anti-gun party with an even more harmful economic program than the first, but with less manifested intent to mistreate certain segments of the population. Those segments, along with their friends and family, might view that alternative as less immediately harmful. Most people are offended by the government efforts to stick their noses into private gun safes. How do you think people feel about equally official efforts to pry into their wombs or sniffing up their asses? And I speak in generalities here, as some members of each party would not fit the typical molds.

I view Republicans as a lesser threat: I feel that I am more likely to have necessary funds and guns with them in control of government. With lawyers, guns and money, I can resist their other bright ideas. Other people feel that Democrats are a lesser threat because of the above-mentioned factors. I can’t think of anyone from my social circle who have any enthusiasm for either, but most hold their nose and vote for the less aggressive evil as perceived at the time.  That’s were this concept of a “left libertarian” comes from — someone who agrees with me on pretty much everything but gives different weight to specific concerns.

In the end, Democrats will probably continue to run around screaming for gun control and punitive taxes against anyone not on welfare, and the Republicans will shove their pet religion where it doesn’t belong, with armed enforcers of virtue jackbooting around. And the Libertarians will continue to have the organizational capabilities of autistic cats, getting the same 1% in every election.
