“And don’t forget to smile!”

One of my closest friends wraps up her voice mail greeting with that advice. Americans are often accused of smiling too much in public. Considering that most foreigners see mainly Americans on vacations, that’s a skewed sample, but even at home, most people here smile a lot. Why shouldn’t they?

A typical movie about war or disaster starts with a brief sample of normalcy. A family at breakfast might be shown, parents worried over something insignificant, kids bickering over something equally petty. Then, five minutes into the story, a war begins, or an earthquake happens, or hungry aliens land, and all the previous concerns suddenly seem very small by comparison.

Think about your own day. Did you wake up healthy, able-minded and in a first-world country? That’s an excellent start. Are people close to you, family and friends, generally doing ok? That, in itself, is a reason to smile.

Do you have problems? We all do. Are they generally surmountable through your own efforts? That’s true for most of us. Again, that’s reason sufficient for happiness.

It can always be worse. You could wake up with chronic pain. You could wake up to incoming artillery barrage. You could wake up in North Korea or some other trashcanistan with closed borders. Your kid or best friend could be down with incurable disease. Have a sense of perspective. Save your frowns for those days.

A quiet day in nature

I love Tennessee Autumn…mid-November with 70*F weather. The targets we set up in the woods get populated with lead and copper, but without our ears getting a beating.

This rifle is one of five SU16s built by keltec in 300 Blackout. Since then, they’ve come up with adjustable gas systems, so something better is in the works. Still, it’s nice and light. It’s available in 5.56mm, numerous configurations.

Reflex AmTac suppressor is nice…but it will be almost another year before ATF deigns to sign off on me getting it. For now, my friends at DTV Tactical Innovations hold it for me while we wait for the paperwork.

Reflex suppressor on a Faxon ARAK21

With the reflex suppressor, 18″ barrel is required on ARAK21 to clear the gas regulator. With an AR15 and short forend, 16″ should be enough, but the result will be slightly louder due to higher gas pressure at the muzzle. ARAK21 has ejection port on both sides, and ejection direction may be switched with just a 180 degree turn of the bolt. The scope, a Lucid 4-16 might seen excessive for the short .30 cartridges (ARAK21 can work with 300 Blackout or 7.62×39), but it gives additional range with detailed drop compensation reticle.

Works from the right shoulder just as well. Charging handle is also switchable.

A tribute to Charles Bronson

The movie rather understated the effect of 7.62mm ball on humans…

HK UMP45

Even with the 0-1-2 trigger group, the run moves more to the right than open bolt M3 Grease Gun. Closed bolt is better for semi-auto, but seems to be a waste for automatic.
