A good reason to support plural marriage

If I understand this correctly, a line marriage in which simultaneous death of all partners is unlikely, would defeat the current version of death tax that robs people of most of their inheritance. It would be less about endorsing an extended definition of marriage and more about sticking it to the tax reapers. Although sticking it to them in a more terminal fashion might feel better, doing it by legal means is usually more effective in the long run.

Movie Review: Winter in Wartime

A Dutch WW2 movie about a family part of which helps a downed British airman, others…not so much. Well-scripted and well-acted.

Plot – 9
Visuals – 7 (excellent action, good props other than people using decocked single action pistols to threaten others, rather annoying cyan cast over much of the scenes)
Music – 7
Acting – 9 (some of the bit players come across ambiguously)

Recommended.

Movie review: Secrets of War

A Dutch WW2 movie about three kids, one a son of a collaborator, another of a resister, the third a Jewish refugee. Well-scripted and well-acted.

Plot – 9
Visuals – 9
Music – 9 (adds a lot to the mood)
Acting – 10 (the characters, even the bit players, come across as realistic)

Definitely recommended.

AF micro adjustment

Would anyone based in Nashville or nearby be willing to show me how to adjust focus on DSLR to verify that the lenses are accurate with my specific bodies? I don’t see any obvious issues that are attributable to mis-calibration, but would like to verify that by less subjective means.

The accuracy of polls.

Imagine getting an anonymous phone call. The caller asks you questions along the lines of “Do you keep expensive jewelry in the house?” or “How many sex toys do you own?” Would you give an honest answer?

How consider the question “Do you own guns?” or “How many guns do you own?”. Better yet, imagine a person living in California or New Jersey, states where the governments have been trying to eradicate legal gun ownership for decades. Would the answers be even remotely likely to be true?

That’s why anti-freedom organizations commission leading polls — to use invalid or misleading “data” to marginalize their opposition. In the minds of our enemies, being a congenital minority, such as left-handed or gay or female (even if the latter is an actual majority) is great — it’s a ready pool of self-identified victims they can pretend to represent. But minorities by choice — people who set up businesses, who home-school their kids, or who own inconvenient property like guns — are their enemies and subject to suppression by legal or illegal means.

Nurture vs nature

Having two talented and accomplished kids in one family adds to the data set to the argument about born ability and how it can be realized. I suspect that more kids than we know have abilities that can be brought out by careful coaching. To me, homeschooling seems to do a better job of individualized development.
