Classic sports have military roots.
Running, wrestling, fencing, archery and javelin all stem from military training. So does biathlon. Could skeet and trap shooting similarly evolve under the martial influences of riot control needs into a more socially oriented sport? Home alone? No problem. (Spelling fixed in … Continue reading
Coming all the way from Russia
Maria Butina came all the way from Russia only to pose with a Russian-made Vepr .308 rifle (though modified so heavily in the US that very few of the original parts remain). TWS forend, dust cover, sight, SGM 25-round magazine, … Continue reading

Larger printable file available on request. Translation: Powerful, long-ranged rifles for hunting and sport — legal. But even the weakest pistols for self-defense — banned.Where’s the logic in that?

The Vepr continues to evolve
The original rifle was a standard 20″ .308 Vepr from Wolf Arms. 20″ barrel combined with Texas Weapons aperture sight on a dog leg scope rail = very long sight radius. Not yet installed but coming — fiber optic front … Continue reading
Enhanced Vepr .308
Vepr rifle with 20″ barrel, Troy Battle Ax stock on ITT hydraulic buffer tube, Aimpoint Comp M2, Viridian X5L light/laser, SGM forend. The forend is going to be switched out for the Texas Weapons part shortly. I’d like to move … Continue reading
Morgan
Tomboy. Sharpshooter. Little girl who cleans up well for pictures. Morgan is 17.
Aimpoint Hunter on a Vepr
With a Humvee, the model doesn’t have to worry about caving in body work. Aimpoint Hunter | Vepr
Anime-grade cuteness
This demure young lady is all concentration once on the firing line. And, once done with her course of fire, all smiles. Above, 16″ Vepr in 7.62×39. And yes, she’s only 14.
Teenage girls and their loud toys
The rifle is a 16″ Vepr in .308, set up with 20rd magazines, 1-5x scope and Magpul MOE stock on ITT hydraulic recoil buffer. Felt recoil is below that of .223, which makes it an excellent plaything for a teenage … Continue reading
And speaking of rooftops…
For sight radius, length matters. Such a long barrel also gives maximum bullet velocity and least muzzle blast. The added weight is surprisingly little thanks to the relatively short forend. Both front and rear sights are adjustable for windage and … Continue reading

Smile!
From an old shoot with Wolf Arms.
For an upcoming magazine article
Also useful for computer wallpapers.
Mixing it up at the range
Took the 308 Vepr to the range for the first time. Since I didn’t have the lowest rings available, the gun could have used a cheek rest. Even so, the nice 2.5-10x scope worked really well at 50 yards. Rain … Continue reading
Teenagers with rifles
These little girls are 16 and 14 respectively. Both a proficient shooters. What’s more important is that they are intelligent and well socialized, coming across as grad students rather than as kids. I think their parents would be justified in … Continue reading

AK boltface tshirt
Like the original AR15 boltface pictogram, this one is an in-joke for those in the know. I guess it’s the firearm equivalent of a masonic lodge pin. 1791 Apparel | Vepr Hunter 308
Two mounting options for AK types
Forward rail, in this case from SGM Tactical. Works well for red dot sights. Side clamp-on mount with Picatinny rail on top. Better for scopes.
Vepr Hunter .308
This rifle is positioned to compete with rifles like Remington 750 Woodmaster. The price, the weight and the other features are fairly similar. Vepr seems like a more robust design overall.
Various Vepr rifles
Above, Robinson 5.45×39 conversion. All examples below are current Wolf Arms imports. .308 Vepr Hunter with an EOTech. The shooter above is 14 and handles it easily. I think this is my favorite variant, as I prefer crossbolt safety to … Continue reading
