Why Malthus was wrong

Felix mechanical calculator, 1960s

Within a couple of decades, this monster was replaced by a palm-size device of greater capability and far lower cost. A few years later, calculators fit in wrist watches. Now they are included as software in just about every communication device. The cost of each additional calculator approaches zero, their marginal environmental impact is near zero also. I think that Michael Crichton was right about the capacity of humans to innovate, especially when free to do so and not enslaved. Slave populations seldom advance civilization and that is why personal freedom equals long-term survival of the species.

Violent Luddites

Anti-gun activists have much in common with the original Luddites. They blame new technologies and users of those technologies for their own plight, and aren’t above using violence to achieve their goals. Luddites did their own killing, whereas “anti-gunners” — more “anti personal guns for ordinary people” in truth — try to use the ATF and other government agencies as their cat’s paw.

The rallying cry of the anti-gun bigots is usually “for reasonable gun control!” They claim that old, simple guns are just fine, it’s the new and extra deadly weapons and ammunition that are the evil incarnate. Even if we assume they aren’t lying about their intentions, let’s look at the history of the devices they are trying to eradicate from common use:

Long range rifles – in civilian use by 1515 for hunting and competition, in common military use by the late 1700s

High capacity handguns – 20-shot pinfire revolvers common from 1830s to 1850s.

Semi-auto pistols with capacity over 10 rounds – 1905 (Savage)

Machine guns – 1882 (Maxim)

Submachine guns – 1915 (Villar Perosa)

Semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles with magazines over ten rounds (1887) – Mondragon

Hollow point ammunition for handguns – 1897 (Webley mk.III)

Automatic revolvers – 1901 (Webley-Fosbery)

Machine pistols – 1932 (Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer, though Steye M1912 also cited as such)

This is only a partial list of the types which the anti-gun people find so objectionable. They have been able to retard the development of small arms and damage the ability of peaceful people to obtain them for self-defense, but to what end? Brigands of all descriptions, from government troops to freelance thugs, are seldom deterred by law from acquiring arms, while the non-violent people are handicapped in defending their lives and families.

We can only hope that Brady creatures and their government enablers would meet the same end as the Luddites, a dismissive entry in history books and a complete political irrelevance.

“Teen rifle” by Doublestar

Standard A2 AR15 is much too long and heavy for many new shooters, especially teenagers and smaller-statured women. The wonderful modularity of AR rifles means all these problems can be addressed. I had this rifle built specifically for training newbies. Flat top means that I can add a red dot to help shooters who are cross-eye dominant.

Light tone was picked so that the rifle wouldn’t heat up in the sun. Short length of pull fixed stock and fixed front sight were both picked for strength, the large sling adapter on the front also acts as the support hand protector. Light profile barrel limits sustained fire capability, but most hunting or self-defense situations are resolved in fewer than 60-80 rounds this barrel can fire rapidly without overheating. This rifle makes a good candidate for a .22 conversion kit for the youngest shooters.

And speaking of .22 conversions, here’s DSC patrol carbine with CMMG .22 kit.

Back in the USSR…it sure feels that way lately

Our grandparents once defeated the real Nazis. These days, they are submitting to groping by the wannabes.

American parents would never hand their kids over to child molesters…unless those molesters wear blue uniforms.

Those who value the Constitutional right to privacy just have to avoid airports…and train stations…and sea ports…and subways…and now public roads. If they stay home, TSA won’t molest them…but local SWAT just might.

Another way to set up Keltec RFB

1-4x illuminated scope gives the option of shooting with both eyes open at 1x and more deliberate, precise fire at 2-2.5x. I prefer to use 4x only when firing from supported positions. Given the scarce rail space left on the RFB after the scope installation and forward ejection, offset iron sights for backup would be ideal.

Drums that work

With rimmed cartridges, drum magazines work very well. Each round has a spot of its own and they only commingle in the feed column. With PPS50, the stack is barely a couple of rounds tall.

Puma metal drums tend to be expensive and a bit difficult to load. BDM drums (the same basic design as their 10-22 and AR15 magazine but without tall feed towers) work rather better.

And the gun looks neat, so I usually bring it for kids to shoot. Once I have .22 tracers expected from SBR, this will only get more amusing. I was curious how CCI “tactical 22” ammo would work, so far it seems to be the bulk equivalent of Mini Mags.

Not having to use a mag loader definitely helps, as I often can’t locate mine or forget it at home.

Won’t need Nazi uniforms for photo shoots anymore.

With TSA becoming a swear-word in itself, I no longer have to make allusions to the recognized evil of last century. The new, shiny, jackbooted evil of today has arrived all over the united states. Their bold strides into everybody’s business are making even ATF look mostly harmless.

Where could I get a TSA uniform for use as a photo prop? Making one from scratch is possible but would take much too long.

Left-hand kids’ rifle

Learning to shoot is tough enough. Learning with a rifle meant for the wrong hand is harder. Fortunately, falling block, lever and certain bolt actions are leftie-friendly. This one even ejects to the left.

Ultrasonic cleaners

Does anyone know what kind of retail stores sell ultrasonic cleaners? I’d like to buy one large enough to fit a rifle receiver, preferably locally in Nashville. Specific model recommendations would be quite welcome.

More than one martial art

Formal shooting competitions originated in Germany about five centuries ago. Top marksmen used wheel lock rifles with range-adjustable leaf sights. Firearm use as a martial art thus predate such traditional disciplines as Aikido and Sambo by over 400 years.

How to improve iPhone 3GS voice recognition?

I just upgraded from 3G to 3GS. When I try to dial by voice command, I get results like “John” when I say “Matt” and “Sam Loulou” when I say “Joann Kibbledasher”. The voice recognition works right about 5% of the time. Is there a way to train iPhone to recognize my voice better?

UPDATE: Dumpted the iPhone and got a 4G HTC Inspire…removable SIM, micro SD, better (and focusable!) still/video camera, all for $50 less than the Apple toy. Voice recognition still sucks badly,

For sale: Sig 556 rifle

I bought this rifle several years ago for use with M4-2000 suppressor (no blowback with it). I ended up preferring the SU16 to it and the rifle wound up being used mostly as the photo prop. It runs 100% and shoots accurately, with minimal recoil.

I upgraded the original unprotected front sight to Samson folding model. The rifle has an AAC flash hider suitable for QD suppressors. It does not come with the scope or the forward grip shown.

Asking $1200 (I have about $1350 in it). I just don’t shoot it enough to justify keeping up with yet another manual of arms besides AR15 and SU16, and I could use the funds for upgrading lenses and video equipment.

Single action for the win!

Brookie sights a Coonan 357, while Alexandra squeezes the trigger on a Para Ordnance 45 and Allison racks her Para. We got wraparound Sawfly safety glasses to make sure that empties can’t enter from the side. Notice than none of the girls seem too concerned about the coming recoil.

All-pink guns are much too girly.

Guns with pink accents, on the other hand…

STI Elektra 9mm

Does anyone remember back in the 1980s many people thought that stainless rifles with black synthetic stocks were just not right? A “real gun” back then was blued and had a wood stock. This stainless and pink 9mm shoots as straight as its gray variant.
