(Pre)Teen Rifle

This boy is 11. He’s been shooting since age 6. During the entire photo shoot with various firearms, he’s shown excellent safety habits, better than most adults.

The rifle was custom-built by Doublestar. Red dot is a PA micro. Eye and ear protection by Champion.

Blue laws

It’s currently fashionable in some circles to worry about the future domination of shariat. People who have previously had no opinion of Islam suddenly develop a strong dislike of it because they worry about being forced to obey its laws.

A cousin recently told me about a tourist trip to Israel. The most visible threat to her safety was from the ultra-Orthodox who were offended by things like people driving on Sabbath, married women with uncovered hair. Much of Judaism is already codified into law there, much to the detriment of the atheists, agnostics and followers of other religions.

I was reminded of all that when grocery shopping at 10am on a Sunday morning. Though I do not drink alcohol, I wanted to buy cider and beer for guests. I forgot that Tennessee law prohibits sale of alcohol on Sundays before noon. Typical of the blue laws, it inconveniences the general population for some obscure reason that makes sense to religious zealots. The only result it has achieved so far is fostering contempt and the animosity for the meddlers in the legislature and for those who lobbied for such restrictions. I can buy the drinks on another day, but the resentment over the imposition remains.

One of the quickest path to being disliked is forcing your religious values on others by law. I ask adherents of all religions to separate themselves from the coercive government methods and stick to proselytizing by more friendly means.

Massacre in Norway

Not surprisingly, photos from the island show numerous rescuers with submachine guns on their shoulders. The mass killing ended when good people showed up with firepower of their own.

Exactly the same happened in Virginia Tech. As soon as police fired on the culprit, he ran to the nearest bathroom and shot himself. I suspect a single person firing back from a classroom would have had similar effect even if not hits were obtained.

Prey animals do not become safer from predators if they are denied horns, quills and claws. Lawful humans are not safer if disarmed by law or custom.

PS: Norway has responded reasonably to threats before. Hopefully, they will treat human threats similarly to how they treat ursine threats.

Proper off-hand technique with a belt-fed weapon

Shane Primm firing Barrett‘s new lightweight version of M240 7.62mm machine gun

This photos is an out-take from an upcoming article in a Harris Publications magazine. The machine gun shown is about 5 pounds lighter than the regular M240 thanks to the billet machined receiver and a fluted barrel.

JARD .22 upper

The charging handle is attached to the bolt carrier, so the receiver back is completely enclosed. Uses BDM magazines. The return spring is in the bolt, so a folding stock (not shown) is possible on this and also on JARD .223 and short magnum receivers. Shown with Primary Arms 1-4x scope which is becoming my standard magnified optic.

Gym update

A mile in 7:50 on the elliptical today (same 8 degree incline). Actually did two gym trips, more on weights in the morning, more cardio in the evening. Happy that I’ve learned to allocate the time for exercise. Extended the membership by two more years. Like digital cameras and rimfire ammunition, gym access is a very affordable luxury, limited mostly by the amount of spare time available.

Coyotes

I didn’t think much about the local wildlife until my cat took to venturing outside regularly. Now I have to worry about coyotes, skunks, foxes, raptors and other cats.

Same wall, different cats

A few of the ways people used the same object for cover during the sniper instructor course run by Denny of SniperProShop.

These represent about half the methods I’ve seen used.

Other people’s cats

The story of social engineering by a cat is common, but the photo posted with it was too cute to pass up.

Running in place.

Yesterday, my best mile on the elliptical at 7 degree incline was 7:49. Today, with incline set at 8 degrees, the time was 8:15. Hopefully, I can bring that down to 7:49 again and then keep taking it down to 7:30 just to see if I can. Apparently, proper stretching is making a huge difference in the results.

No innocents abroad?

  1. Other than the United States, which other countries charge citizens returning from foreign travel with violations of domestic laws while abroad? I see more and more references to tourists being prosecuted upon return and of foreign nationals being charged with crimes under US laws for actions performed outside this country.
  2. Other than the United States, which other countries charges taxes on incomes of their expatriates? Other than US and South Africa, which other countries impose an exit tax on people moving elsewhere?

(I would assume Cuba would be on the list. USSR used to be. Who else?)

An Act of Self-Defense, the book

I just read it and recommend it to others: An Act of Self-Defense by Erne Lewis. The book describes a possible future along the lines of “Unintended Consequences” but with somewhat greater realism. The writing quality is decent, the plot likewise, mostly it’s food for thought.
