Photographer Matt at the range
Camera, rifle, good company — enough for a contented smile. When darkness falls and the Morlocks come out, he will be ready…if I remember the spare batteries.
Yesterday at the range.
(Photo by Matt Vollman) SU16 locked on an empty magazine. Trijicon Reflex strikes me as a good sight for a short-range defensive rifle — it’s always on and has a fairly wide field of view. Laser provides a backup solution. … Continue reading
Protect yourself. Protect your hearing.
For a professional musician like Lauren, firing an unsuppressed rifle can be a career-ending event. Rifle reports are all too close to concussion grenade (flashbang) noise levels. Taking them down by 28-40dB makes a big difference. So does wearing plugs … Continue reading

They won’t ban your single-shot .22, right?
.22 rifles are, by definition, rifled. In quite a few countries, that’s subject to a higher level of restriction than smoothbores. 22LR round is fixed ammunition, and that is also more restricted compared to loosely loaded black powder guns. The … Continue reading

Turning 18.
Three years ago, I took this photo of 15 year old Rachel. She had fun with the bolt action but had to shoot it from a support due to the stock length and considerable overall heft. Yesterday, I took photos … Continue reading

A better way to peace and quiet
ATI1911-22 with an AAC Pilot suppressor shown. Walther P22, M&P22 and 1911-22 all use the same threaded adapter for mounting suppressors.
After a string of fire.
Suppressed SU22 is light enough and quiet enough for a comfortable social outing in the woods of Tennessee. Everyone shot suppressed that day, so the ear plugs aren’t in evidence.

My hunting rifle and Katyn forest.
I own many rifles, but I only hunt with one of them. Feinstein’s latest effort to disarm Americans would ban it. It would ban that entire shape of rifle (bullpup) as well as that entire category (semi-auto with a box … Continue reading

The twisted “logic” of gun control laws.
This is a 10-22 receiver. By US law, this is considered a firearm. If you bring this item to a “gun-free” zone, you would be guilty of a felony. In case of Browning M1919 machine gun, the “firearm” is merely … Continue reading

I Love Integral Suppressors.
I like the full sight radius, the quiet report and the improved balance. In some cases, the low-key look also helps. This one is from SRT Arms.
The Hidden Inflation.
Producers are under two pressures: to raise prices to account for the loss of purchasing power of each dollar, and to lower prices to attract customers with declining incomes. They most obvious way to accomplish both is to keep the … Continue reading
Bringing Down the Bacon
Buck, Dwayne and Weston (not pictured), along with their dogs arranged the meeting. They guide hunts in Florida and Tennessee and may be reached at 321-960-4287. I ended up running about 500 yards after the dogs to catch up with … Continue reading

Faxon uppers — a better mousetrap.
At the recent industry shoot, I had a chance to try new Faxon AR uppers. The design is an AK-style long-stroke piston with a FAL-type gas regulator. It allows effective suppressed use without any gas blowback at the shooter. Little … Continue reading

Amazing rifles shot this Tuesday
223-308-338 — all superbly accurate (we used Black Hills match ammo), all showing mild recoil and very moderate report, with great triggers and ergonomics. Hits on 500 yard steel targets were easy. Good optics obviously helped. More photos by DDB.

You can’t ride like that!
These two are well equipped for the the less common human road hazards, but they are missing leather and helmets for the more usual perils. It takes both — and good judgment — to be safe.

Oh say can you see?
110-pound girl firing a 13+ pound rifle off-hand? Check. Left-handed user running a bullpup comfortably? Check. Sound suppressor making muffs unnecessary? Check. Great day at the range today? Check.
