Another custom pen by Brian

A couple of weeks ago, Brian Evichin gave me a hand-made pen. I finally had the time to post photos of it.

The cap is magnetic and snaps on to either end of the pen. It’s truly a gift fit for a friend and has been duly forwarded to someone deserving.

If you want one of your own, checkout code “olegvolk11” gets you 10% off. Brian also makes pens out of rifle catridges.

Fun guns

SAR21 bullpup rifle with integral laser (Singapore). Built-in 2x scope. Very nice ergonomics, including ambidextrous charging handle. Semi/auto switch is a cross-bolt in the stock.

9mm AR is good for practicing at pistol-only firing ranges.

Laptop problem — any ideas?

When I got my laptop about 15 months ago, a couple of times it blanked the screen to gray, requiring a reboots. That problem them ceased.

Today, I had the same happen twice, followed by three more crashes with screen turning vertical pattern of alternating white and red or black and red lines. No rhyme or reason as to when it happens. Any ideas on what could be causing that?

I am now spoiled for all other sushi!

I just returned from a four-day handgun course at Front Sight in Nevada. The review of the course and the equipment used in it is coming soon. For now, I’d like to talk about food.

The Fat Greek was superb, every bit as good as It’s Greek To Me in Minneapolis. Be ready for very large portions.

Kaizen, a very cozy and unusual Asian fusion restaurant run by my friend Nick was beyond superb. They have the freshest fish I ever had, some of it delivered live. The rolls were so delicious that death by gluttony is a real possibility.

The trouble with Kaizen is that now there’s no point in me even bothering with sushi in Nashville…I am unlikely to get anything even remotely comparable to the delicious treats crafted by Nick’s sushi chef. If you happen to be in Vegas for SHOT Show or any other reason, this place is a must-see.

From kneeling position, she does consistent head shots at 25 meters. Spare mag stowage idea borrowed from La Femme Nikita.

Coonan .357 automatic

Coonan | Sideguard | Larger photos

My interest in Coonan pistols was accidental. John Paul of JP Rifles mentioned him and let me photograph an old one from his collection. I then had a chance to fire a current pistol in Nevada before SHOT Show. The pistol looks slightly blocky but it’s grip has the same circumference as the regular M1911. It has a better trigger than any M1911 I’ve used, mainly because it’s a well designed pivoting type. Recoil is very mild even with 158gr .357mag ammo. We used four ammo types, it digested them all. In the desert, with targets at 25+ meters, the flat trajectory was a major plus: hitting half-size steel silhouettes was child’s play.

The pistol is not cheap but it’s worth the money. It’s a pleasure to shoot, it’s accurate, will even function with .38 Specials (with a lighter recoil spring). It does what 10mm Auto promised to do…unlike 10mm, .357Mag ammo is easy to find and comes in a wide variety of bullet weights and types. Sideguard holsters shown work wonderfully to make the pistol feel comfortable in daily carry.
