Akdal MKA1919

The manual of arms for the MKA1919 is half-way between AR15 and Sig556, a lot closer than that of other autoloading shotguns.

Bad laws and impositions on freedom.

I am not much of a legal expert, so my comments on the recent Supreme Court decision would be by analogy. US has had similar levels of idiocy before, in particular during WW2 and again during the 1970s. Remember “wage and price controls”? I don’t know history well enough to tell by what mechanism those specific impositions were dismantled back then, but it would make for a useful study.

My point is that this isn’t the end of the world, merely a gradual impoverishment of the population combined with a massive reduction of personal freedom. Much like East Germany, not quite on level with North Korea. The difference from East Germany is that emigration is still legal (though IRS wants to tax expats almost forever) but the similarity is that Fed agencies (particularly FBI, DEA, ATF) are trying to enlist gratuitous numbers of informants. The pernicious effect of providing monetary incentives for informing on fellow Americans to the Big Brother or the state-level “friends of the people” is going to be a longer-lasting, more detrimental cultural effect than the economic damage itself.

We’ve been through this before with the 1850-1861 events. We’ve also seen wartime laws against spies and alien sympathizers used to quash domestic dissent during both Wold Wars. Somehow, this country survived and even some of its culture. At this time, censorship isn’t yet in full swing, so we better use the opportunity to interest our friends and neighbors in that quaint notion of “live and let live”.

Two movies in one day.

I have not gone to the movies in a very long time. Today, I ended up watching two in a row.

First was Brave 3D, which I very much recommend. The trailer for it did not do the movie justice. Excellent and somewhat unpredictable plot, good visuals, better acting by cartoon character than by most live actors.

Next was Snow White and the Huntsman, an utter waste of time. Lame, incoherent story, poor acting, absolutely atrocious attention to realism of the props. It would make a good candidate for MST3K.

The very adjustable SSG08

I will be posting a practical comparison between SSG08 and SSG69 later this summer. One is adjustable but the other has the charm of simplicity.

Shown here with the old version of 3.5-15×56 Nightforce scope.

24″ RFB in use

4-16x Vortex scope, Gemtech Sandstorm suppressor, Magpul VFG, RSA and sling.

Same but with Keltec muzzle brake instead of the suppressor, and with Viridian X5L RS on the rail. I can’t wait to get it zeroed. Federal and Hornady both provided high-grade ammunition…but the weather in Nashville is expected to get to 116*F and that’s a bit much for daylight range time.

The gentleman behind the gun is a real sniper.

The heffalumps are in trouble…

And speaking of A.A.Milne — does anyone know why all the texts of “Winnie the Pooh” are gone from the Internet all of a sudden?

Good article on rape prevention

On a blog with the funniest header graphic. And he does have my position correctly pegged: rape, along with other physical crimes against another person, should be a capital offense at the attempt stage.

Minor quibble: I’d estimate the number of sociopaths as much lower than 3-4% of the population. 2% would be my guess for the number of people who just don’t play well with others for various reason but aren’t full-blown sociopaths. Stupidity and lack of social skills are more frequent explanations than psychopathy.

A sterling example of today’s youth

My favorite 308 rifle.

After 8 months, my new 7.62 suppressor tax stamp finally got approved by ATF. My RFB has been restored to the correct configuration. YHM BUIS, 1-4x illuminated scope and (not shown here) Viridian laser on the quad rail. With 4x maximum magnification, it can do about 1.5MOA, giving useful range up to 500 yards. Very well balanced even with the suppressor, completely ambidextrous. Magazine may be inserted straight up. Very low felt recoil, great trigger. Ejects forward with casings coming out too slowly to cause injury. Fairly quiet thanks to the double-layered receiver and forward ejection.

Down sides I have already mentioned: slow administrative chamber checks, heat retention due to forward ejection. To my mind, the strengths much outweigh the weaknesses.

Bullpups typically do not have usable iron sights, but this one does. Sight radius on it is similar to the M4 carbine.

If you want one, my local gun store has it.

Installed that barrel on a 12ga 870. It points just about perfectly, just need to verify zero with slugs.

Going through the mail bag…red dot magnifier

One thing I love about travel is that I usually come back to a whole bunch of new toys in the mail.

Put these together and you get a swing-out magnifier for red dot sights. Could be useful around the house…err, range.
