More than one martial art

Formal shooting competitions originated in Germany about five centuries ago. Top marksmen used wheel lock rifles with range-adjustable leaf sights. Firearm use as a martial art thus predate such traditional disciplines as Aikido and Sambo by over 400 years.

How to improve iPhone 3GS voice recognition?

I just upgraded from 3G to 3GS. When I try to dial by voice command, I get results like “John” when I say “Matt” and “Sam Loulou” when I say “Joann Kibbledasher”. The voice recognition works right about 5% of the time. Is there a way to train iPhone to recognize my voice better?

UPDATE: Dumpted the iPhone and got a 4G HTC Inspire…removable SIM, micro SD, better (and focusable!) still/video camera, all for $50 less than the Apple toy. Voice recognition still sucks badly,

For sale: Sig 556 rifle

I bought this rifle several years ago for use with M4-2000 suppressor (no blowback with it). I ended up preferring the SU16 to it and the rifle wound up being used mostly as the photo prop. It runs 100% and shoots accurately, with minimal recoil.

I upgraded the original unprotected front sight to Samson folding model. The rifle has an AAC flash hider suitable for QD suppressors. It does not come with the scope or the forward grip shown.

Asking $1200 (I have about $1350 in it). I just don’t shoot it enough to justify keeping up with yet another manual of arms besides AR15 and SU16, and I could use the funds for upgrading lenses and video equipment.

Single action for the win!

Brookie sights a Coonan 357, while Alexandra squeezes the trigger on a Para Ordnance 45 and Allison racks her Para. We got wraparound Sawfly safety glasses to make sure that empties can’t enter from the side. Notice than none of the girls seem too concerned about the coming recoil.

All-pink guns are much too girly.

Guns with pink accents, on the other hand…

STI Elektra 9mm

Does anyone remember back in the 1980s many people thought that stainless rifles with black synthetic stocks were just not right? A “real gun” back then was blued and had a wood stock. This stainless and pink 9mm shoots as straight as its gray variant.

My new pet

A trip to K&S World Market yielded this distinctive gentleman.

Considering his valiant stand against the cat, perhaps the crawfish should be named Leonidas. Considering that he won’t come when called anyway, naming him would be a wasted effort.

The crustacean now has an aquarium of his own.

New varminting rig

Coyotes are becoming a problem for a friend. To assist, we’ve put together a new rig for night varminting.

Keltec RMR30 (22WMR autoloader) with Gemtech sound suppressor (also to remove muzzle flash). Folding “iron” sights for daytime use, 4x night scope with infrared illuminator for darkness.

Lightweight PMR30 pistol that uses the same ammunition and magazines as backup.

In use photos as soon as I get a camera adapter.

Economist John Lott

Last week, I met John Lott for the first time in twelve years. I last saw him in  Minnesota back in 1999. His research and articulate writing have done much for the civil rights in the US.

Woe unto the varmints

Coming soon from Keltec: 30 rounds of 22WMR, great trigger and accuracy, almost no recoil. Charging handle doesn’t reciprocate. Stock will have intermediate positions. Muzzle threaded for a suppressor or a flash hider. Very lightweight.

BAZ45 in newbie hands

This is one centerfire rifle I try to bring out when teaching newbies. This gas-operated 45ACP rifle feeds from “grease gun” magazines and has no more recoil than a 10-22.

Note to self: next time, cover the use of hasty sling for support

Bullseye Brookie and her 6.8mm Mean Green

6.8mm SPC (Hornady HP shown here) is a pretty effective round. The bullet weight is twice of .223 and muzzle velocity isn’t that much lower.

6.8mm “Mean Green” with 4×32 ACOG is a nicely built rifle. It is comfortable to handle, has backup MI iron sights just in case, light/laser and a bipod. Its Magpul furniture is finished in a tastefully subdued candy apple green.

Bullseye Brookie likes her rifle. Dad had it made it just for her.

Small arms are fun at any age

Scoped Crickett rifle. The scope actually has mildot reticle, so a young shooter can adjust for drop of CB caps or subsonic .22LR if parents pick those to reduce the report.

And the stocks are available in many colors other than fashionable, manly pink.
