One way to rejuvinate an old weapon

A friend brought in his truck gun today. When it entered the studio, the magazine was full of ball, upon exit of modern defense ammunition. It may be a small change, just better terminal performance and less muzzle flash, but … Continue reading

AR57 upper

I borrowed this AR57 upper (in 5.7x28mm) from a friend specifically for the amusement of certain friend’s daughters. Both of his girls are left-handed, so the upper that has next to no recoil and ejects down through the magazine well … Continue reading

Details of yesterday’s AK74 clone

I got this for my friend as a set from MI. He brought it for me to see on the way back from the range, so the rifle is rather dusty.

Accurate rifles deserve good ammunition

Now that I finally learned to shoot rifle, I am starting to appreciate the difference between bulk milsurp and better varieties. I am by no means a sniper but 2MOA ball and half-MOA match behave visibly different even at a … Continue reading

Reloading ammunition: a good hobby when it’s 106 degrees outside

Definition of a conundrum: having a great rifle and sufficient ammunition (courtesy of Federal and Hornady) but not being willing to roast or boil at an outdoor range. Indoor ranges are an option, but the extra noise isn’t to my … Continue reading

GSG522 gets scoped

When I took the 522 carbine to the range first, I had a (broken) red dot sight with it — predictably, the results didn’t look useful until I removed it and used iron sights. The gun comes with several front … Continue reading

Ammunition expenditures

My last range trip lasted three and a half hours. We brought three guns only and hand three people alternating on a single firing point. No rapid fire, one zeroing. Ended up shooting about a hundred rounds each of .308, … Continue reading

Mixing it up at the range

Took the 308 Vepr to the range for the first time. Since I didn’t have the lowest rings available, the gun could have used a cheek rest. Even so, the nice 2.5-10x scope worked really well at 50 yards. Rain … Continue reading

Riots vs. pogroms

I hear quite a few worried comments about the possibility of civil unrest in the US. Looking at the precedents, I see three directions it could take: riots, pogroms and freelance criminal activity. The latter, individually perpetrated crime, is what … Continue reading

A young lady becomes a rifleman

Combine a child-sized bolt action rifle, a box of low-power quiet .22 ammunition, eye and ear protection, high-visibility targets, three patient instructors and a precocious girl aged four and a half. She drilled with her mother earlier in the week … Continue reading

Pleasant surprises at the range.

When I go to a range, I usually fire off the magazine in my carry pistol to replace the old ammunition with fresh. With the 1911, I am always surprised when my target gets illuminated with a red dot. I … Continue reading

An excellent range day

For once, I went to the range without a camera. With several guns to fire in a limited time and poor lighting available, I concentrated on having fun. We set up at 25 yards and played for a while. One … Continue reading

In case your KSG doesn’t hold enough ammunition…

…bring a dozen more rounds with you on a Mesa Tactical side-saddle. If you use 3″ shells, that would be an extra full pound of launch-able lead.

15 rounds of 12ga

With magnum shells, the full KSG load of 15 shots adds up to a whole pound (!) of lead. With reduced recoil 1oz loads and straight stock, KSG becomes a very comfortable shotgun.
