Which do we need more often, side arms or med kits?

A shout-out for my friend Shawn and his company.

Aperture sights for AK rifle

While notch and post sights work reasonably well with young eyes and select-fire weapons, aperture sights are usually preferred for semi-auto rifles. In the AK world, that  includes Valemt, Galil and the new Russian AK12. Tech Sights and Texas Weapon Systems both make receiver cover replacements with integrated sights. Both nearly double the sight radius, making it longer than on an M4 carbine.

Some people think that better sights on AK rifles is a waste of effort. Do a simple test: if you can shoot more accurately with a red dot or a scope than with iron sights, then the stock sights are a limiting factor in accuracy.

Pistol in a garter is silly. That’s where spare magazines go.

From Czechpoint photo shoot. In this instance, I’d worry more about the Gorgon stare and less about the minor firearm factors…

15 rounds of 12ga

With magnum shells, the full KSG load of 15 shots adds up to a whole pound (!) of lead. With reduced recoil 1oz loads and straight stock, KSG becomes a very comfortable shotgun.

Similar manual of arms

One major advantage of AR15 platform is the number of calibers and configurations that all share the same manual of arms. At first glance, MKA1919 appears to be another AR15, but appearances are deceiving. Internally, this 12ga shotgun is most similar to Remington 1100 converted to box magazines.

It’s a piston driven gas-operated semi-auto shotgun. It shares the right-hand side charging handle with the 1100 but the rest of the controls are all AR. Standard magazines hold 5 rounds and can be inserted easily with the closed bolt. 10-round magazines are coming soon. The entire shotgun weighs only 6.5 pounds, so it can be held on target with one hand during a reload. Sights are optimized for slugs and buckshot — for wing-shooting, I’d suggest a folding rear sight an EOTech, Trijicon Reflex or similar red dot with a wide field of view. The carry handle is removable and I would recommend a ghost ring flip-up sight instead. Custom versions seen at SHOT show have rails and folding, telescoping stocks.

This design fixes my main complaint about shotguns: slow and awkward loading. With box magazines, changing ammunition types is quick and reloading takes very little manual dexterity. The pouch shown holds up to seven 5-round magazines, giving 35-round loadout in a compact configuration.

The other advantage is the low muzzle rise and relatively mild recoil for such a light shotgun. 6.5lbs might be a bit on the light side, but optics, sight/laser and ammunition add to it, so the gun in fighting trip ends up at 8-9lbs.

For a person who is an AR15 user, not having to re-learn between guns can be valuable. And it gives the option to throw 400-450 grains at a time instead of 55-62. Shown with 2.75″ magazines, this gun also works with 3″ magazines. Cylinder bore choke is installed, others (including rifled) are available. I’ll post the range report soon.

Teenagers with rifles

These little girls are 16 and 14 respectively. Both a proficient shooters. What’s more important is that they are intelligent and well socialized, coming across as grad students rather than as kids. I think their parents would be justified in being a little proud of the results.

AK boltface tshirt

Like the original AR15 boltface pictogram, this one is an in-joke for those in the know. I guess it’s the firearm equivalent of a masonic lodge pin.

Two mounting options for AK types

Forward rail, in this case from SGM Tactical. Works well for red dot sights.

Side clamp-on mount with Picatinny rail on top. Better for scopes.

An honorable obligation

Wedding vows are heavy on promises. Implied in them is the intent to keep the spouse safe. It’s not the promise to “protect by calling strangers to our aid” but to “cherish and protect”. The obligation is gender-neutral. A single person may choose, however foolishly, to be defenseless and unprepared. For a family member to be willfully incapable of dealing with emergencies — medical, criminal or others — is inexcusable.

It’s a little strange to me that some people would marry and then either not bother with acquiring competency or actively view the interests of violent criminals or dangerous animals (or any other potential threats) as equal or superior to the interests of the spouse. My friends usually take this obligation seriously. Witness Kit and John right after their wedding.

Dennis

Got to see Mr. Dragon Leather on my last visit to Knoxville. Picked up a new pocket holster for PF9 with .22 conversion kit and Laserlyte laser (photos soon) — it’s so beautifully made, I wonder how I would be able to stand concealing it…

308 main gun (Vepr, again) and 45ACP backup seem like a pretty reasonable combo. Photo taken at Wolf Arms.
