One way to rejuvinate an old weapon

A friend brought in his truck gun today. When it entered the studio, the magazine was full of ball, upon exit of modern defense ammunition. It may be a small change, just better terminal performance and less muzzle flash, but even Josey Wales liked his percentages.

The pistol is Makarov Modernized, PMM (12 shots of 9×18 or, in this case, 380ACP). If anyone knows of a spare magazine for it for sale, please let me know.

Why I always insist on eye protection at the range

Lucky Gunner folks tested a whole bunch of eyewear. Their results were surprising to me. That said, even the junkiest of the safety glasses would turn away gas, so wear at least something — but preferably a high-end pair.

Who needs armor-piercing ammunition?

For starters, every innocent victim of the psychopath and/or terrorist in Aurora, Colorado. He wore armor. The same people could have used sound suppressors, both to avoid being blinded by their own muzzle flashes in the dark and to reduce recoil.

FN57 with proper (non-fragmenting) defensive ammunition. SS190 is hard to find but still available.

In the absence of vest-busting ammunition, any pistol with any rounds would have been better than none. Arms, head and legs all have major blood vessels. Arms in particular are often hit when armed suspects are shot — no instant stops that way but a major impediment to further slaughter of innocents.

Those who have been to firing ranges know how much concentration is required to make accurate hits. Return fire, even if technically ineffective, still has a way of breaking the attacker’s concentration. And most trained people would have eventually scored hits. Had more than one lawful gun carrier been present, Mr.Psycho would have ended up in a crossfire — again, not a position conducive to marksmanship against moving people in semi-darkness. But he got to shoot helpless, unarmed marks without any fear of return fire — in part thanks to the theater policy prohibiting lawful carry, in part due to the complacency of the theater-goers.

Sig551 with a twist

He modified the 556 to look more like the Swiss military 551, with tritium night sights and a steel top rail. The resulting rifle is a little heavier than the US 551-A1 that it resembles and it uses AR-compatible magazines.

The optic on top is an NVG-compatible Aimpoint T1.

Have you ever wondered what “SSG” means?

Steyr SSG08 isn’t pretty. Like PKM and RPG7 it’s what you haul out when utility trumps aesthetics. 12-42x Nightforce scope might be a bit much for it, but it does help to see the whites of their eyes at very long ranges.

Then and now.

The past was never perfect, but certain excesses of today would have been beyond comprehension to our ancestors. And, hopefully, beyond the “Nuremberg defense” for the current perpetrators.

Not just for small bore shooters anymore!

The AR sight picture tshirt isn’t just for riflemen anymore. MKA1919 has the same sight picture and so fits the canon.

Same rifle, bigger caliber

The logic of 300BLK is simple: twice the weight of metal at the cost of slightly less flat trajectory. At 100 yards, the difference in drop is only 2″, at 200 it grows to 8″. Still within point blank for a human opponent. The benefit is greater penetration and larger wound channel. Since most defensive rifles are used up close, seems like a good trade to me.

AR57 upper

I borrowed this AR57 upper (in 5.7x28mm) from a friend specifically for the amusement of certain friend’s daughters. Both of his girls are left-handed, so the upper that has next to no recoil and ejects down through the magazine well was just the right toy.

Because the rear rail on this upper is so short and because inserting magazines requires certain clearance, the compact Primary Arms prismatic 3x proved the best fit. For lack of room for a rear sight, I added a tiny CTC laser to the front rail instead in order to have some backup for close range. That rail is nowhere near the barrel, so heat isn’t an issue. The upper is pure blowback, so there’s no gas tube. I used a Cavalry Arms lower to reduce the weight.

I have some handloads with Barnes “varmint grenades” and samples from Elite Ammunition on the way, so we’ll find out how well it shoots next range trip.

The shooter shown is a wonderful example of successful home schooling. At 16, she has the demeanor rivaling the best-socialized adults. Working with her and her father was a rare pleasure.

Details of yesterday’s AK74 clone

I got this for my friend as a set from MI. He brought it for me to see on the way back from the range, so the rifle is rather dusty.

Accurate rifles deserve good ammunition

Now that I finally learned to shoot rifle, I am starting to appreciate the difference between bulk milsurp and better varieties. I am by no means a sniper but 2MOA ball and half-MOA match behave visibly different even at a hundred yards.

CZ527 Varmint again.

Another little CZ527 carbine

This 527 Varmint carbine has a heavier barrel and turns in 0.4MOA groups with handloads. Obviously, that is with a skilled shooter behind the gun. My friend’s father is such a shooter.

CZ527, the beautiful little performer

Nice wood, excellent single set trigger. Not my gun, unfortunately. I borrowed it from a friend’s father. The father shoots it with handloads and gets consistent 1MOA groups with it. He uses it without a bipod, I added that just for the photos. Hickok45 did a very informative video about it back in January. I will post detail images later.

A serious man

A friend dropped by while I was doing pinups and jokingly volunteered to pose with the model. I took him up on the idea.

Rifle is an AK74 clone with Midwest Industries forend and a Primary Arms red dot. It’s actually his wife’s rifle.

Supported firing

Denny from Sniper Pro Shop demonstrates a shooting position at a course for police sniper instructors. Excellent training, I very much recommend it.

The rifle is a Remington 700 with a detachable magazine, the scope is a Leupold (can’t recall what model).
